Diversity PRSA 2018.png

Diversity is everyone’s responsibility. We all need to “own” diversity for it to be successful in our organizations, and in turn, to make our organizations successful. How is your business, and even your department, doing in terms of recruiting, hiring, including and retaining diverse talent? Alaka Williams, Senior Vice President of U.S. Networks-Human Resources for Discovery, will talk about the whys and hows of incorporating diversity into the lifeblood of your business and its communications. Alaka will address the challenges of localizing diversity, outline how diversity is a growing business driver, and share best practices in communicating with diverse audiences.

At Discovery, Alaka is responsible for providing organizational, leadership and individual performance counsel to various business units, facilitating change and transition with these units through the assessment, design, facilitation and implementation of appropriate organizational intervention, and being in touch with employee needs and human resources communities.

In addition to her professional work, she’s also involved in the Emma Bowen Foundation’s Youth and Young Professionals program and the Year Up program in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, as well as the T. Howard Foundation’s mentor program for promising college students interested in media. In 2018, Alaka joined the Board of Directors for Girl Talk which is an organization that wants to inspire all girls to develop the confidence to lead by empowering one girl at a time.

Alaka has been recognized by the National Association of Multi-Ethnicity in Communications (NAMIC) for her commitment to fostering diversity. She is a proud graduate of NAMIC’s Executive Leadership Development Program and has been named one of the organization’s Luminaries. She has also been honored as one of Cablefax magazine’s Most Influential Minorities in Cable.
